Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
