Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for details.
An important political figure said the incident rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
